The New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 at Bharat Mandapam witnessed a rich confluence of ideas, reflection and contemporary storytelling as authors Kartikeya Vajpai and Shailendra Jha connected with readers during engaging sessions at the Penguin Random House India stall.

Kartikeya Vajpai spent time with readers during a quiet yet absorbing book-signing interaction centred on his debut novel, The Unbecoming. The exchange unfolded informally, marked by candid conversations with book enthusiasts, festival visitors and first-time readers drawn to the novel’s philosophical depth. As Vajpai signed copies, discussions moved naturally across literature, lived experience and the inner tensions associated with ambition, success and personal transformation.

Speaking about the impulse behind the book, Vajpai reflected on how his book, The Unbecoming, emerged from his long engagement with sport, professional life and contemplative practice. He described the idea of “unbecoming” as a necessary undoing of inherited identities and expectations, and fiction as a space where enquiry remains open rather than prescriptive. Many readers responded by sharing how the book echoed their own moments of transition and self-questioning.

Reflecting on the exchange, Vajpai said, “The Unbecoming is not an argument but an invitation. It asks us to pause, to question the identities we carry so effortlessly, and to consider what remains when we stop performing them. Conversations with readers bring that enquiry alive in ways writing alone never can.”

On the second day of the fair, award-winning author Shailendra Jha drew an enthusiastic audience with a lively discussion around his latest novel, Press 9 for a Crime. The interaction explored themes of cyber scams, digital arrests and the human cost of online fraud, striking a strong chord with readers navigating an increasingly digital world. The session also touched upon storytelling across formats, including web series and cinema, reflecting the evolving landscape of crime fiction in India.

Sharing his thoughts, Jha said, “What I’ll take back from the New Delhi World Book Fair is the love of readers. My gratitude to Penguin Random House India and to every visitor who joined me to discuss Press 9 for a Crime, storytelling, web series and cinema.”

Together, the two sessions highlighted the breadth of contemporary Indian writing, spanning introspective literary fiction and sharply observed crime narratives. The presence of Kartikeya Vajpai and Shailendra Jha reaffirmed the New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 as a vibrant platform for meaningful literary exchange, where authors and readers engage in dialogue that extends well beyond the page.

Read More: News
