As wellness continues to shape consumer sentiment and lifestyle choices across hospitality and travel, GRT Hotels & Resorts recently organised a wellness-focused event at Radisson Bengaluru City Centre, reflecting this growing interest in mindful living and balanced experiences.

Titled “Aura For Life Party,” the event brought together fitness enthusiasts, influencers, and members of health-conscious communities for an evening centred on wellness, conscious choices, and sustainable wellbeing.

The initiative was conceptualised in collaboration with Raja Ajith, IFBB Pro athlete and fitness influencer, and was aligned with the group’s GRT “GReaT Being” philosophy, which emphasises the integration of wellbeing, sustainability, and lifestyle within hospitality experiences. More than 40 fitness influencers from South India attended the event.

Commenting on the initiative, Vikram Cotah, Chief Executive Officer, GRT Hotels & Resorts, said, “The GReaT Being philosophy is about creating a balance between well-being, responsible choices, and sustainable practices. Through initiatives like this at Radisson Bengaluru City Centre, we aim to make wellness a natural part of everyday hospitality—through thoughtful service and mindful food.”

The event formed part of the hotel group’s wider focus on wellness-oriented experiences and reflected the increasing relevance of healthy food choices, sustainability, and conscious living in contemporary hospitality. Further reinforcing this philosophy, the hotel invited enthusiasts to continue the wellness experience at home through a set of health-forward recipes shared by its chef.

He’s a powerhouse in Indian hospitality. Nikhil Sharma, Managing Director and COO, South Asia at Radisson Hotel Group, moves through boardrooms and balance sheets with effortless command. But beyond the titles and high-stakes decisions lies a story far more grounded and transformative.

What keeps a high-flyer like Nikhil Sharma centred while navigating the relentless pace of the industry? Spoiler: It’s not spreadsheets or strategy.

Today’s Traveller caught up with Nikhil Sharma not to talk shop, but to explore something deeper, his quiet revolution through Vipassana meditation. In this conversation, he opens up about how silence, stillness, and self-inquiry have shaped him, not just as a leader, but as a father and a human in constant evolution.

SEEING CLEARLY: THE VIPASSANA MEDITATION WAY

Vipassana, meaning “to see things as they really are”, isn’t just a meditation practice. It’s a full-on reset for the soul. Rooted in ancient India and revived over 2,500 years ago by Gautama Buddha (yes, the enlightenment guy), it’s one of the most timeless and transformative tools for inner clarity.

The Buddha practised it at 35, found profound peace, and spent the rest of his life sharing it, not as dogma, but as a path.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.todaystraveller.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/WhatsApp-Image-2025-08-06-at-13.41.14_ba18398e-1024x576.jpg" alt="Vipassana Centre

What makes Vipassana meditation so compelling in our hyper-distracted, always-on world? It’s non-sectarian, and refreshingly no-frills. There are no mantras, no incense, no chanting. Just you, your breath, and a radical kind of presence.

Practitioners scan their bodies with deep, neutral awareness, feeling sensations, letting go of attachments, and inching closer to mental stillness. And yes, it’s intense. Taught in silence over 10-day retreats around the globe (no phones, books, or talking—just 10 hours of meditation daily), it’s a full detox for the mind.

“It’s not religious,” Sharma notes, leaning in with the kind of clarity that only comes from lived experience. “Vipassana is spiritual. It doesn’t care what you believe, it cares how deeply you’re willing to look within.”

A JOURNEY BEGINS: DISCOVERING VIPASSANA

For Nikhil Sharma, the path to Vipassana didn’t begin with a dramatic epiphany—it started with a whisper. Mentions here and there in conversations, passing references in professional circles. But it wasn’t until he stumbled upon videos of Acharya S.N. Goenka—the modern torchbearer of the practice, that something clicked.

“I read about it, saw Goenka ji’s talks online, and something resonated. His clarity, the simplicity of the teachings, it felt like truth, unembellished,” he shares.

Wellness journey – Vipassana meditation

But Vipassana meditation isn’t something one stumbles into casually. Preparing for a 10-day silent vipassana meditation retreat requires both logistical planning and mental readiness.

“I mentally prepared myself for six months,” he says. “The first time I applied, the confirmation came too close to the date. I couldn’t rearrange my business schedule. So I waited and reapplied during a known down period and made it.”

What followed was an experience that tested every fibre of his being.

THE RETREAT: SILENCE, STILLNESS, AND SURRENDER

Held in a secluded centre, the Vipassana retreat begins with a powerful commitment—noble silence. No talking. No eye contact. No gestures. Nothing to pull you out of yourself.

Men and women are housed separately, and even within the same group, solitude is strictly observed.

Each participant gets a bare-bones private room, a bed, and a washroom, no frills. There’s no staff tending to the comforts; you do everything yourself. Laundry, cleaning, and washing your own utensils.

It’s a far cry from the curated luxury of hotel life.

“For hoteliers like us, used to a certain lifestyle, it’s a major reset,” Sharma says with a smile. “You eat a light vegetarian meal by 11:30 in the morning, and that’s your last meal for the day. Evenings are just tea or lemon water.”

Meditation in nature – Vipassana meditation

Days begin in silence at 4:00 AM and roll into structured hours of meditation, all the way through to 9:00 PM. No phones, no books. Just structured stillness.

Goenka’s audio discourses provide the only form of guidance, equal parts philosophy, psychology, and gentle encouragement. On-site teachers are present for queries, but no conversation is allowed.

By Day 2, Sharma hit a wall.

“I was physically and mentally broken,” he admits. “I thought I could do it, but I wanted to leave. The mind starts playing games, making you believe something terrible is happening outside, that your family or work can’t manage without you.”

But somewhere between resistance and resolve, something shifted. “I told myself: one more day. And then another. Eventually, I finished the 10-day vipassana meditation. And it changed me.”

What began as a mental challenge became a deep unlearning. A reset not just of routine, but of perspective.

CLEANING THE MIND LIKE A HOUSE

Talking about his Vipassana meditation journey, Sharma drops a gem of an analogy: “It’s like moving into a dusty house. First, you clean the big debris. Then you clean again, and again, each time removing finer particles. Vipassana is like that. You clean your mind layer by layer. It’s not instant enlightenment. It’s a process.”

In the early days, he admits, it was brutal. But around Day 6 or 7, the internal chatter dials down, and the silence, once deafening, starts to feel like home.

He shares, “You begin to observe thoughts without clinging to them. That in itself is freeing.”

Since his first experience, Sharma has completed three courses, two 10-day sessions and a shorter 4-day retreat reserved for returning practitioners. Each time, he finds something new.

LEADERSHIP WITH PATIENCE AND PRESENCE

For Sharma, the biggest shift Vipassana brought wasn’t in his schedule, it was in his leadership style.

He says, “I’m far more patient now. When you’re leading large teams, it’s easy to lose your temper when things don’t align. But with meditation, you start recognising your own patterns. You reflect on your reactions.”

Has he gone soft? Not even close. He remarks, “Not at all. I’m still ambitious. I still want to grow, push boundaries. But now I pause. I listen. I act with more clarity.”

He believes that self-reflection is a leadership muscle too few cultivate. In a world that often glorifies hustle over headspace, Sharma’s all for bringing introspection to leadership.

He points out, “If you used to get angry for an hour a day, now you reflect and maybe it becomes 50 minutes, then 30. It’s about progress, not perfection.”

Still sharp, still driven, just with a calmer edge.

Interestingly, Sharma doesn’t advocate for Vipassana to be institutionalised in companies. “I don’t want to impose it,” he says. “Each person’s path is their own. My wife finds her peace in early morning gym workouts. Others might find it in music or yoga.”

However, Nikhil Sharma strongly believes that leaders, especially at senior levels, must find a discipline that grounds them. He shares, “Whether it’s Vipassana or something else, you need a practice that allows you to be still, so your actions can be deliberate.”

IN SEARCH OF BETTERMENT

As we wrap up, Sharma smiles thoughtfully. “I don’t think I’m religious. But I’m a seeker,” he says. “Whether I’m visiting a mosque in Kashmir, a gurudwara in Punjab, or the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala, I’m always searching for meaning, balance, purpose.”

And that search, rooted in reflection, not ritual, is what sets him apart.

For someone leading a global hospitality powerhouse in one of the world’s fastest-growing markets, it’s this inner compass that keeps him anchored.

“In the end,” he says, “we’re all striving to be better. Vipassana helped me start that process from the inside out.”

In a world obsessed with speed, Sharma offers a different blueprint: where stillness meets strategy, and leadership isn’t only about driving results, but about knowing when to breathe, listen, and grow.

This rare and intimate look into his journey reminds us that the strongest leaders are often the quietest seekers.

There’s something incredibly old-school yet irresistibly fresh about Europe’s famous spa towns. Think ornate colonnades, steaming mineral springs, vintage bathhouses, manicured promenades, and whispered stories of royalty who once “took the waters.” For Indian travellers craving a luxe escape soaked in wellness, culture, and serious visual vibes, Europe’s spa towns serve it all—with a side of rose-scented serenity.

Let’s go on a thermal tour of some of the most beautiful European spa towns that offer more than a soak—they’re cultural gems, wellness sanctuaries, and stylish city breaks rolled into one.

Karlovy Vary, Czechia: Bohemia’s Crown Jewel

Start with Karlovy Vary—Czechia’s grande dame of spa towns in the Czech Republic. Nestled in a lush forested valley, this Baroque beauty looks straight out of a Wes Anderson daydream. The town is known for its 13 hot springs and over 300 smaller springs, all rich in minerals reputed to heal digestive and metabolic disorders. Don’t leave without sipping water from the ornate spa fountains (bonus points if you drink it from a porcelain spa cup with a built-in spout).

But it’s not all thermal water and treatments—Karlovy Vary is also the birthplace of Becherovka, a spicy herbal liqueur, and home to the glitzy Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Eurovision has sparked global curiosity about one of Finland’s most iconic traditions: the sauna. For many travellers, stepping into a sauna often comes with a swirl of uncertainty—do you need to be nude, can you talk, what’s the deal with the felt hat? Now, Helsinki is embracing this moment of international attention to showcase an important truth: sauna culture in Finland, and especially in its capital, is not about rules. It’s about doing what feels right.

As Eurovision fans look toward the stage in Basel, Helsinki is shining a spotlight on another cultural headliner—one with steam, soul, and centuries of tradition. While the mental image of a steaming wooden room and cold plunge may be familiar, the experience itself can feel unfamiliar to visitors.

No Right Way to Sauna in Finland (Image courtesy: Leena Karppinen, Helsinki Partners)

International visitors are often curious but hesitant. Questions come up around sauna etiquette: Must one go in without clothing? Is it okay to speak inside? Can water be thrown onto the stove? Why is someone wearing a hat in 90-degree heat?

In Helsinki, the answer to most questions is refreshingly simple: do what feels natural to you and remain respectful of others. Comfort, personal boundaries, and shared respect guide the experience more than any fixed set of rules.

It’s Time to Drop the Myths

Helsinki Debunks a Popular Myth Ahead of Eurovision 2025 (Image courtesy: Leena Karppinen, Helsinki Partners)

“It’s time to forget the rules and rituals you might have heard. In Helsinki, the sauna is a reflection of freedom, self-expression, and social connection,” says Sanna Forsström, Head of Brand & Events for the City of Helsinki. “Once inside, most visitors are surprised to learn how relaxed, diverse, and personal the experience really is. For many, the sauna becomes one of the most memorable parts of their stay.”

Locals of all ages in Helsinki sauna year-round—sometimes even daily. It’s a deeply embedded lifestyle, welcoming everyone regardless of age, background, or body type. To highlight this openness, Helsinki launched a sauna-themed photo campaign featuring locals showcasing their own ways of enjoying sauna. Their portraits now appear throughout Helsinki and even on the streets of Basel, encouraging Eurovision fans to experience sauna culture their own way.

Helsinki Heats Up for Eurovision

This Eurovision season brings extra steam to the city. Finland’s official entry, Erika Vikman, is generating buzz, and the Swedish delegation includes KAJ, a trio of Finnish performers, two of whom call Helsinki home. To celebrate, Helsinki is hosting a wide range of sauna-themed festivities across the city—and even beyond its borders.

No Right Way to Sauna in Finland (Image courtesy: Leena Karppinen, Helsinki Partners)

Between May 15 and 17, Helsinki will participate in Bara Bastu, a three-day public sauna experience on Djurgården Island in Stockholm, sharing the joy of sauna culture with Eurovision fans across the sea.

In Helsinki, the festivities begin with SAUNAVISION, a public sauna pre-party at Töölönlahdenpuisto, where locals and visitors alike can try around ten different saunas before the Eurovision Grand Final. More celebratory steam sessions include the Kyrö Distillery sauna on Keskuskatu and the upcoming Super Terrace sauna experience opening downtown on June 12.

Although May will be full of sauna-focused events, Helsinki’s sauna culture continues long after the stage lights dim. With more than 60 public saunas, the city welcomes locals and visitors all year. These include world-famous architectural icons like Löyly and Allas Sea Pool, scenic island saunas such as Lonna, and beloved local gems like the self-service Sompasauna.

We’ve all heard tales of our ancestors’ strength, their deep connection with nature, and the wholesome diets they thrived on. While modern science has brought incredible advancements, have we truly unlocked all of nature’s secrets or are we still catching up?

Spoiler: Nature has had the answers all along! From Ashwagandha’s stress-busting magic to Neem’s skin-saving superpowers or Black Cohosh being the ultimate mood-swing manager, these herbs have been solving problems long before labs existed.

Sure, our egos might make us overlook these natural remedies, but maybe it’s time to listen to the wisdom of the past. After all, why fix what isn’t broken? Let’s dive into the world of herbs—where science meets tradition, and solutions grow on trees, literally!

Ashwagandha: Your Natural Ally Against Stress

This ancient Indian root, celebrated in Ayurveda for centuries, is clinically proven to lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and boost energy levels. It also supports thyroid function, helping regulate metabolism and mood.

As an adaptogen, it strengthens your body’s resilience to daily chaos—whether it’s deadlines, burnout, or just life’s curveballs. Studies highlight its ability to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and even enhance physical stamina. Available as tea, capsules, or powder, it’s a versatile addition to your wellness routine.

Pro Tip: Pair Ashwagandha with a calming evening ritual for maximum zen, and yes, always consult a doctor before starting any new supplement!

Ginseng: The Root of All Genius

Meet Ginseng, the brain’s favourite multitasker, here to turn your mental fog into a spotlight moment. Known as the “king of herbs,” it enhances cognitive function, sharpening focus and memory, while its anti-inflammatory properties help combat joint pain and chronic inflammation.

Need energy without the caffeine jitters? Ginseng does the job! Unlike caffeine, it boosts energy smoothly and sustainably, like swapping a rusty bike for a sleek electric ride. Studies around the world back its role in supporting immune health and reducing stress. It also gives your immune system a friendly high-five while tackling inflammation like a pro.

Pro Tip: Mix Ginseng extract into honey-sweetened tea or morning smoothies for a radiant, “I woke up like this” glow!

Black Cohosh: Every Women’s Bestie!

Black Cohosh is a natural remedy for women tackling hormonal challenges, from menstrual cramps to menopausal hot flashes and mood swings. Used for centuries by Native Americans and supported by modern research, this North American root helps balance estrogen levels, offering relief from discomfort and emotional turbulence.

It’s particularly effective for easing menopausal symptoms like night sweats and irritability. Pair it with dark chocolate for a soothing ritual that enhances its benefits. You can enjoy this wonder in various forms, like tea, capsules, or tinctures, making it an easy fit for any wellness regime.

Pro Tip: For optimal benefits, consistency is the key, and yes, we don’t want you to delete the number of your family Gynec!

St. John’s Wort Says, Why So Depressed?

St. John’s Wort is a natural mood lifter, often called “nature’s sunshine in a bottle.” This vibrant yellow herb is widely recognised for its ability to ease mild to moderate depression and reduce anxiety by boosting serotonin levels—your brain’s feel-good chemical.

Research shows it can be as effective as some antidepressants, minus the heavy side effects. It’s also a star at easing seasonal blues and calming nervous tension. Beyond easing these challenges, this sunny herb is also explored for its potential in managing ADHD, Somatic symptom disorder (extreme anxiety over physical symptoms), and even Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). While research is ongoing, its serotonin-boosting powers make it a promising natural option for a range of mental health challenges.

Pro Tip: Depression is a serious illness. If you or someone you know may be affected, reach out to a healthcare provider for help!

Neem: Nature’s Dermatologist

Consider it as the Swiss Army knife of herbal remedies, packing antibacterial, antifungal, and skin-reviving powers into every leaf. This ancient Ayurvedic superstar tackles acne, eczema, and fungal infections like a pro, leaving your skin glowing and irritation-free.

Beyond skincare, it’s a natural detoxifier, purifying your blood and boosting your immunity while even farmers use it as a green alternative to chemical pesticides!

Slather it as oil, chew its twigs (yes, it’s ancient toothpaste!), or add it to skincare routines for a radiant glow as it has been nature’s ultimate wellness hack for centuries!

Pro Tip: Mix neem powder with honey for a DIY face mask. Warning: Its bitterness might make your taste buds revolt, but your skin will thank you.

Milk Thistle: Your Liver’s Soulmate

Milk Thistle is your liver’s ultimate wingman, stepping in to detoxify and protect like a superhero with a PhD in liver health. Its active compound, silymarin, repairs liver cells, fights toxins, and even helps with fatty liver disease. Whether you’ve overindulged in pizza or had one too many cocktails, Milk Thistle has your back. Historically, it was used to treat mushroom poisoning (yes, it’s that powerful!).

But wait, there’s more! It doesn’t just stop at liver love but is also a champion for your skin, helping to clear acne and give you that natural glow by flushing out toxins. Studies suggest it may even support cholesterol levels and blood sugar regulation, making it a multitasking marvel.

Pro Tip: Pair it with a glass of lemon water for an extra detox boost while who knows your liver might just send you a thank-you note!

Saw Palmetto: Small Berry, Big Benefits for Men’s Health

Meet Saw Palmetto, the prostate’s herbal hero, here to tackle urinary woes and keep things flowing smoothly. This powerhouse berry is a game-changer for men’s health, reducing symptoms of an enlarged prostate (like those midnight bathroom runs) and improving overall urinary function. Its natural compounds block hormones that cause prostate issues, offering a gentle yet effective alternative to medications.

Used for centuries by Native Americans, it’s now backed by modern science for its prostate-protecting powers. Studies also suggest it may support hair health by reducing DHT levels, a hormone linked to hair loss. Whether you’re dealing with prostate concerns or just want to stay ahead of the game, Saw Palmetto is the nature’s gift worth considering.

Pro Tip: Pair Saw Palmetto with a handful of pumpkin seeds rich in zinc—because your prostate deserves a snack too!

From ancient Ayurveda to modern science, herbs like Ashwagandha, Neem, and Saw Palmetto prove that nature has always been the ultimate healer.

Whether it’s calming your mind, glowing your skin, or keeping your body in balance, these green wonders are here to save the day.

In today’s fast-paced, screen-dominated world, many people feel disconnected from nature, leading to stress, anxiety, and a sense of emptiness. However, scientific studies, expert insights, and real-life experiences prove that reconnecting with nature can significantly improve mental and physical well-being.

Start Your Day with Nature

A study published in Frontiers in Psychology investigated the impact of nature exposure on stress hormone levels. Over an eight-week period, 36 urban dwellers were instructed to spend at least 10 minutes, three times a week, in an outdoor place that made them feel connected to nature.

Participants provided saliva samples before and after these nature experiences to measure cortisol levels. The findings revealed that spending 20 to 30 minutes in a natural setting, either sitting or walking, led to the most significant reduction in cortisol levels. Beyond 30 minutes, additional stress-reduction benefits continued but at a slower rate. This study offers valuable insights for healthcare practitioners to prescribe ‘nature pills’ as an effective, low-cost nature therapy strategy to combat stress in urban environments.

The Balcony Escape: For those struggling with high stress and poor sleep, you can created a morning ritual of sitting on your balcony, sipping herbal tea, and listening to birds. Within weeks, you will notice reduced anxiety and increased focus at work. Make this nature therapy practice a part of your daily life.

Practice Mindful Breathing in Nature

Research from Harvard Medical School confirms that deep breathing in nature lowers blood pressure and improves emotional regulation. Harvard has extensively studied the benefits of deep breathing techniques and their impact on stress reduction and emotional regulation. Practicing slow, deep breathing for just a few minutes daily can lower blood pressure, potentially reducing systolic blood pressure by up to 10 points.

While specific research combining deep breathing with nature exposure is limited, engaging in these nature therapy practices separately has been shown to yield significant health benefits.

Japanese “Forest Breathing: Executives in Tokyo practice deep breathing in small parks during lunch breaks. Many report improved decision-making, reduced stress, and better mood throughout the day.

The Art of Living Foundation in India promotes nature therapy programs focussing on mindful breathing through outdoor yoga retreats, helping thousands experience the benefits of nature-assisted breathwork.

Take Tech-Free Nature Therapy Breaks

Research from the University of California, Irvine, underscores the cognitive benefits of immersing oneself in nature. Gloria Mark, a Chancellor’s Professor of Informatics at UCI, highlights that spending just 20 minutes in natural settings can significantly reduce stress and enhance creativity. This aligns with the Attention Restoration Theory, which posits that exposure to natural environments replenishes directed attention capacities, thereby improving focus and reducing mental fatigue.

Incorporating nature breaks into daily routines can serve as a practical nature therapy strategy to rejuvenate the mind, boost creativity, and maintain optimal cognitive function.

Digital Detox in Himachal Pradesh: Take a tech-free weekend retreat in Himachal Pradesh, trekking in the forests and meditating in the mountains. After returning, you will feel more focussed and re-energized. Schedule weekly digital detox hours.

Grow Something Green

A NASA Clean Air Study found that houseplants improve indoor air quality, reducing stress and enhancing focus. The Study investigated the potential of houseplants to improve indoor air quality by removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene.

However, beyond air purification, numerous studies have highlighted the psychological benefits of indoor plants. Interacting with indoor plants has been shown to reduce physiological and psychological stress, as evidenced by decreased sympathetic nervous system activity and lower diastolic blood pressure. Additionally, the presence of indoor plants has been associated with improved concentration and productivity, enhancing overall well-being.

Urban Gardens in Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s community gardens have helped city dwellers reconnect with nature. You can transform your apartment balcony into a small vegetable garden, which can become your daily stress reliever.

The concept of Rooftop Farming is gaining traction in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, helping people cultivate their own food and reconnect with nature.

Eat and Move with the Seasons

A study in The Journal of Nutrition states that consuming seasonal foods enhances immunity and supports gut health.

The report highlights that consuming seasonal foods enhances immunity and supports gut health. This is corroborated by research indicating that seasonal dietary changes can significantly affect the composition of our gut microbiota. For instance, a study observed consistent and significant population-wide shifts in microbiome composition across seasons, likely due to dietary fluctuations between seasons with respect to produce availability.

Additionally, consuming local seasonal produce has been associated with higher nutritional content and reduced intake of harmful pesticides, further contributing to improved health outcomes. Therefore, aligning our diets with seasonal food availability not only supports gut microbiota diversity but also bolsters immune function, leading to enhanced overall well-being.

Ayurvedic Eating in Kerala: Resorts in Kerala, such as Tamara, Kairali and Somatheeram Ayurvedic Resort, emphasize eating according to seasons. Visitors experience seasonal diets that align with their body’s natural rhythms, improving digestion and energy levels.

Healing through food: Resorts like Ananda in the Himalayas, Swaswara in Karnataka, Niraamaya Retreats, Atmantan Wellness Resort, Maharashtra exemplify India’s rich tradition of utilizing food as a natural healing technique, providing guests with immersive experiences that promote holistic well-being

Engage Your Senses with Nature

A thematic analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology explores the multiple pathways through which nature engagement benefits mental health, highlighting sensory input as a key factor.

The study suggests that sensory experiences in natural environments—such as the sights, sounds, and smells—can reduce anxiety by fulfilling an innate human desire for such stimuli. This aligns with the biophilia hypothesis, which proposes that humans have an inherent affinity for nature. Additionally, exposure to nature has been linked to improvements in cognitive performance, including working memory and cognitive flexibility.

These cognitive benefits are often attributed to Attention Restoration Theory, which posits that natural environments engage effortless attention, allowing directed attention capacities to replenish.

Madhubani Art Therapy, Bihar: Artists in rural Bihar engage deeply with nature by using natural dyes and painting on handmade paper, inspired by trees, rivers, and animals. Studies show that this tactile connection to nature lowers stress and increases creativity.

Try Forest Bathing (Shinrin-Yoku)

Japanese research in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine states that forest bathing reduces heart rate and stress levels. This study investigated the physiological effects of shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, on 280 participants across 24 forests in Japan. The findings revealed that engaging in forest environments led to significant reductions in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels, indicating decreased stress.

Additionally, there was an increase in parasympathetic nerve activity, suggesting enhanced relaxation. These results support the therapeutic benefits of forest bathing in promoting cardiovascular health and stress reduction.

Nature therapy retreats across India offer several serene forest retreats where guests can immerse themselves in nature and experience the benefits of forest bathing.

Jim Corbett National Park, India – A Silent Healing Retreat: Attend a silent forest retreat in any hill station or national park where it is available. In Jim Corbett National Park, a forest retreat encourages participants to practice Shinrin-Yoku (forest bathing). Walking barefoot on the forest floor, inhaling the fresh air, and simply being present in nature will help you overcome emotional exhaustion.

SwaSwara Wellness Retreat, Karnataka: SwaSwara in Gokarna, provides a tranquil environment for guests to reconnect with nature. The retreat offers guided nature walks through lush forests, promoting mindfulness and relaxation. Guests can also participate in yoga sessions, meditation, and art therapy, all designed to enhance well-being and inner peace through nature therapy.

Ananda in the Himalayas, Uttarakhand: Ananda in the Himalayan foothills, integrates traditional Ayurveda, yoga, and Vedanta philosophies. The 100-acre estate is surrounded by sal forests, providing ample nature therapy opportunities like forest bathing and nature walks.

Camp or Stay Off-Grid for a Weekend

A PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) study found that time spent camping resets circadian rhythms, improving sleep patterns.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="273" src="https://www.todaystraveller.net/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Wilderness_Therapy_and_Backpacking.jpg" alt="Wilderness therapy programs often use backpacking trips as a way to help people grow.
A study published in Current Biology investigated the impact of natural light exposure on human circadian rhythms and sleep patterns. Participants who spent a weekend camping without artificial light sources experienced a significant shift in their internal biological night to align more closely with sunset and sunrise. This alignment led to earlier sleep onset and improved sleep quality, demonstrating that exposure to natural light-dark cycles can effectively reset circadian rhythms and enhance sleep patterns.

The Wilderness Reset: If you feel drained by the pressures of daily life, a wilderness therapy backpacking trip might be the perfect escape. Trek through remote trails, set up camp under the stars, and let the simplicity of nature quiet your mind. The physical challenge of hiking, combined with the solitude of the wild, fosters resilience and clarity. Without digital distractions, you’ll reconnect with yourself and those around you, returning home with a renewed sense of calm and purpose.

The Spiti Valley Escape: If you are overwhelmed by corporate stress, spend a week camping in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. With no Wi-Fi and only natural surroundings, you will feel deeply rested, with improved focus upon returning to work.

Rishikesh Revival: The Yoga capital of the world offers riverside camping along the banks of the Ganges River. Campers can enjoy activities such as white-water rafting, yoga sessions, and meditation retreats, all set against the backdrop of lush forests and rolling hills. The serene environment provides an ideal setting for relaxation and mental rejuvenation.

Create a Daily Nature Ritual

A University of Michigan study found that exposure to nature for at least 10 minutes a day enhances happiness and reduces mental fatigue. Over an eight-week period, 36 participants were instructed to spend at least 10 minutes, three times a week, in an outdoor place that made them feel connected to nature. These nature experiences indicated a significant decrease in cortisol levels—a physiological marker of stress. The most efficient stress reduction was observed in nature experiences lasting between 20 to 30 minutes, after which additional benefits continued but at a slower rate.

A walk in the park: Incorporating regular, short intervals of nature exposure into daily routines may serve as an effective strategy to enhance mental well-being and cognitive performance.

Varanasi’s Ganga Rituals: In Varanasi, locals perform morning Ganga Aarti rituals, watching the sunrise over the river. This deep connection to nature and tradition provides spiritual fulfillment and mental peace.

Give Back to Nature

Research in Ecopsychology Journal states that volunteering for conservation efforts increases happiness and a sense of purpose. Volunteers experienced increased well-being through their contributions to nature conservation efforts.

Eco-activists across India continue conservation efforts, encouraging people to plant trees and protect the environment.

The Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) organizes weekend programs across various states, focusing on the restoration of lakes, ponds, beaches, and forests. These initiatives not only support ecological restoration but also provide volunteers with a fulfilling experience of collective action and community-driven environmental stewardship.

The Wildlife Trust of India offers volunteering opportunities where individuals can contribute their skills and time to wildlife conservation projects. Volunteers assist in various activities, from field research to community outreach, thereby playing a vital role in preserving India’s biodiversity. The hands-on engagement fosters a strong emotional connection to nature, reinforcing a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

By dedicating time and effort to conservation, volunteers experience the intrinsic joy of making a tangible impact. The shared mission of safeguarding natural habitats cultivates a deep sense of fulfillment, community bonding, and personal growth, ultimately leading to greater overall well-being and happiness.

Nature is a State of Being

Reconnecting with nature doesn’t require drastic changes—it’s about small, mindful shifts in how we engage with the world around us. Go ahead – choose to grow a plant, take a silent walk in the park, or spend a weekend in a forest. Nature has the power to heal and transform.

Six Senses invites guests to embrace the therapeutic benefits of cryotherapy and thermotherapy treatments through practices including ice baths, Roman bathing, steam, and sauna to reduce muscle tension, alleviate pain and stress, bolster the immune system, aid detoxification, and boost mindset and mood. Six Senses Hotels and Resorts is among the few hotel brands worldwide that offer hot and cold therapies at nearly every property.

Anna Bjurstam, Six Senses Wellness Pioneer, shares, “Through my journey, I’ve discovered that the path to longevity is enriched by the powerful interplay of hot and cold thermal therapies. By embracing hormesis, we can harness the benefits of controlled stressors to enhance our body’s resilience and vitality. This biological phenomenon, where low doses of stress stimulate beneficial responses, is key to improving health and longevity. I believe that when we share these transformative experiences as a community, we not only improve our individual health but also strengthen our collective well-being.”

The brands Spa in Kyoto proposes traditional Onsen-esque hot baths, a cold plunge, a sauna, and steam facilities to guests and spa visitors. The hot baths ease muscle tension and pain, improve circulation throughout the body, and promote relaxation and deeper sleep. While the body floats in the steamy water, an intricate vertical rock wall outside has a calming and contemplative effect to unwind the mind.

Stimulate the Five Senses with the sauna meisters in Switzerland

The brand’s Spa in Crans-Montana introduces a unique sauna experience featuring Aufguss ceremonies, a sensory ritual combining music, storytelling, temperature variations, aromas, and dance, led by skilled Sauna Meisters. Along with the traditional Finnish Sauna, there’s a Rock Sauna that draws inspiration from the surrounding granite peaks to sweat out toxins.

The Bio Salt Sauna, adorned with rose pink Himalayan salt bricks, a crystal known as the master healer, enhances detoxification and improves focus. The fast-acting Infrared Sauna directly heats the body to reduce joint pain and improve cardiovascular health. The cold plunge and ice fountain stimulate circulation and oxygen uptake, boost the immune system, and gently exfoliate the skin.

New Therapies in India and Abroad

Health retreats are continuously innovating and offering new therapies to meet the evolving needs of their guests. Here are some of the latest and most sought-after therapies:

India, with its rich tradition of holistic healing and natural therapies, is home to some of the world’s most renowned wellness retreats. These retreats offer a perfect blend of ancient wisdom and modern wellness practices.

Panchakarma Detox
Panchakarma is an ancient Ayurvedic detoxification process that eliminates toxins from the body and restores balance. It involves five main treatments: Vamana (therapeutic vomiting), Virechana (purgation), Basti (enema), Nasya (nasal administration), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting).

Sound Healing
Sound healing uses the vibrations of sound to relax and heal the body and mind. Instruments like Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and tuning forks are used to create soothing sounds that promote deep relaxation and emotional release.

Marma Therapy
Marma therapy is an Ayurvedic practice that involves stimulating specific energy points on the body to promote healing and balance. It is believed to improve circulation, boost immunity, and relieve stress.

New Therapies Abroad

Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures for a few minutes. It is used to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and boost metabolism. Cryotherapy chambers are becoming popular in wellness retreats around the world.

Floatation Therapy
Floatation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation, involves floating in a tank filled with Epsom salt solution. It helps in reducing stress, relieving pain, and enhancing mental clarity. The therapy is gaining popularity in wellness centers in Europe and North America.

IV Nutrient Therapy
IV nutrient therapy involves infusing vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream. It is used to boost energy levels, improve immunity, and promote overall well-being. Many wellness retreats in the USA and Europe now offer this therapy.

The Role of Nutrition in Health Retreats

Nutrition is a cornerstone of health retreats, with many programs emphasizing the importance of healthy eating for overall well-being. These retreats often provide gourmet meals that are not only delicious but also designed to support specific health goals.

Key Elements of Nutrition in Health Retreats

Personalized Nutrition Plans
Many retreats offer personalized nutrition plans based on individual health assessments. These plans are tailored to meet the unique needs of each guest, whether they are looking to lose weight, detoxify, or improve their overall health.

Organic and Locally Sourced Ingredients
Wellness retreats emphasize the use of organic and locally sourced ingredients. This ensures that the food is fresh, nutritious, and free from harmful pesticides and chemicals.

Plant-Based Diets
Plant-based diets are a common feature at wellness retreats. These diets focus on whole foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds, which are rich in nutrients and beneficial for health.

Nutritional Education
Wellness retreats often include educational sessions on nutrition, helping guests understand the importance of healthy eating and how to make better food choices. These sessions may cover topics like mindful eating, reading food labels, and understanding macronutrients and micronutrients.

Detoxifying Foods
Detox programs at such retreats include foods that support the body’s natural detoxification processes. These foods may include green leafy vegetables, herbs like cilantro and parsley, and antioxidant-rich fruits like berries.

Embracing Longevity: The Fusion of Wellness and Vacation

The fusion of health and wellness with vacation activities is reshaping the landscape of global health resorts, driven by a burgeoning interest in longevity and the expanding wellness travel market. Here are some key insights from the latest longevity research and treatment programs:

Luxury resorts are now offering innovative treatments like biological age testing, poolside vitamin IV drips, and stem-cell therapy. These high-end services are part of the growing trend towards “Longevity Vacations” and specialized “Longevity Clinics.”

Regenerative wellness is gaining traction, emphasizing holistic approaches that combine lifestyle changes, therapies, and scientifically backed treatments. This concept is contributing to the global longevity market, which is projected to reach nearly $183 billion by 2028.

Biohacking treatments such as cryotherapy and infrared light treatments are becoming staples at luxury resorts, enhancing their wellness offerings. The focus on sleep and recovery is also paramount, with resorts designing dedicated suites and partnering with AI-powered smart bed companies to ensure guests achieve optimal rest.
