Kerala’s Munnar shines in Agoda’s Asia rural escapes list, lauded for its misty hills and peaceful getaways.

Digital travel platform Agoda has announced its list of the top rural destinations in Asia, with Kerala’s scenic hill station Munnar securing a coveted place in the top eight. With sprawling tea plantations, mist-clad hills, and a tranquil environment, the destination is drawing travellers who seek immersive experiences in nature away from the bustle of India’s major cities.
Rural destinations, particularly those nestled in mountains and hillsides, are gaining popularity among travellers eager to explore beyond bustling city hotspots and connect with local culture and natural beauty. These highland locales promise a slower pace of life, offering the chance for visitors to unwind and enjoy the environment while escaping crowded urban hubs.
Agoda’s data ranks destinations across eight markets in Asia with a population under 50,000, based on accommodation searches carried out between 15 February and 15 August 2025. The findings revealed that Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands claimed the crown as Asia’s most popular rural destination, followed by Khao Yai in Thailand and Puncak in Indonesia. Fujikawaguchiko in Japan, Kenting in Taiwan, Sapa in Vietnam, Munnar in India, and Pyeongchang-gun in South Korea completed the top eight.
The expansive tea plantations of Munnar in Kerala and the lush landscapes of Cameron Highlands in Malaysia illustrate how these secluded spots each bring a distinct flavour and provide a refreshing escape that contrasts with the pace of city life.
