The monsoon season is increasingly becoming more than just a season – it’s becoming a reason to travel. Earlier this year, Airbnb‘s Never the Same report found that 7 in 10 Indian Gen Z travellers prefer three short trips over one long annual holiday – a generation trading the planned annual escape for something more frequent, more personal, and more alive. This monsoon, that shift is showing up in the Airbnb searches data.

The Rise of the Monsoon Micro-cation

Recent Airbnb search data1 shows that Indian travellers are embracing shorter escapes during the rainy months, with domestic monsoon searches increasing by almost 40% year-on-year, signalling the season that once kept people home has quietly become a reason to leave.

This shift is reflected not only in where people are travelling, but also in how they are planning their trips. Airbnb search trends show growing interest in weekend getaways and short trips lasting 3-5, highlighting a preference for flexible travel that fits around busy schedules.

Beyond the Metros

At the same time, travellers are increasingly looking beyond urban centres in favour of destinations that offer nature, local culture and a slower pace of life. Searches for non-metro destinations grew by over 40%, reflecting a desire to experience the monsoon in places where the season transforms the landscape.

Among the destinations seeing a growing interest this season are Coorg, known for its mist-covered coffee estates; Kochi, with its waterfront neighbourhoods and rich cultural heritage; Udaipur, where rain brings new charm to the city’s lakes and palaces; Varkala, where dramatic cliffs meet the Arabian Sea; Jaipur, whose vibrant bazaars, palaces and rich cultural experiences take on a different charm during the rains, and Goa, whose quieter beaches, lush greenery and laid-back communities offer a different perspective during the monsoon season.

Monsoon travel is also proving to be a social affair. Airbnb search data suggests growing interest in trips taken with partners, friends and family, with duo travellers leading search growth, followed by larger groups. Whether it’s a cosy weekend in the hills, a villa getaway with friends or a family escape by the coast, travellers are increasingly choosing to experience the season together.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, said: “This monsoon season, we’re seeing travellers embrace the rains in new ways – taking shorter, spontaneous breaks, venturing beyond traditional tourism hotspots and choosing destinations where the rain becomes part of the experience.”
