Launch of the 10 day food festival – Flavours of Malaysia at The Westin Chennai Velachery

Flavours of Malaysia event is in continuation to the celebration of the 65 Years of Diplomatic Relations between India and Malaysia. Delegates from the Ministry of Tourism, India join in celebrating this occasion with Tourism Malaysia, Sarawak Tourism Board, The Airline Partner- Malaysia Airlines, and Hospitality Partner- The Westin Chennai. The Artists come all the way from Sarawak to showcase the beautiful culture of Malaysia with the exquisite dance performance.

Consul General of Malaysia for South India, His Excellency Saravana Kumar stated that “India and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1957. The two countries enjoys a strong relationship and presently India and Malaysia have established close political, economic and Socio-Cultural relations. This year 2022 marks the 65th year of establishment of bilateral relationship between India and Malaysia. We are delighted to have this event – Flavours of Malaysia to celebrate this occasion”.

Director of Tourism Malaysia (South India & SriLanka) Razaidi Abd Rahim shared that, “With the borders being opened effective April 2022 and relaxation of entry procedures from 01 August 2022, there has been a huge demand for travel to Malaysia and we are extremely thankful for the partners Sarawak Tourism Board, Malaysia Airlines and The Westin in making this occasion possible. India has been the Top Contributor for Tourists arrival into Malaysia and is ranked fourth for the year 2022 with Passengers count of 109,377 from January to July and details from August till date is awaited. This is in comparison from January to December 2019, Passengers arrival of 735,309”.

Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Datu Hj Salleh Askor informed that “The Sarawak Food and Cultural promotion at the ‘Flavours of Malaysia 2022’ in Chennai is very timely and significant in establishing a strong brand of Sarawak as a gastronomic paradise.

Sarawak is renowned for its diversity in ethnicities and culture, that brings forth a wealth of authentic dishes and food, passed down through generations and now part of the cultural fabric of each community. With Kuching being the first city in Malaysia to be recognised as a “City of Gastronomy” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in 2021, it is clear that Sarawak’s culinary treasures make it a must-visit destination for foodies everywhere”.

Malaysia Airlines, Country Manager- South Asia, Amit Mehta said, “Malaysia Airlines is delighted to support the Flavours of Malaysia event at The Westin Chennai where visitors can experience first-hand the country’s tantalising culinary offerings. Malaysia is known as a melting pot of diverse cuisines and rich flavours, owing to its multi-ethnic population. We hope that with this festival – Flavours of Malaysia will spur more tourism activities between the two countries, and look forward to welcoming travellers to enjoy the complete Malaysian Hospitality experience onboard Malaysia Airlines.

Chef Abdul Aziz from Sarawak comes all the way to Chennai to demystify the traditions and practices found in Malaysia for the gourmands of Chennai. He now carries a tag of a Master in Malay Cuisine and is all set to showcase his expertise that reflects the multiethnic makeup of its population. Chef Haminah the culinary field, her passion for cooking has taken her to countries like Indonesia, pleasing thousands of palates with flavors that reflect the strong, spicy, aromatic nature of Malaysia cuisine and showcase how it’s a perfect confluence of the different cultures which have influenced it.

Flavours of Malaysia festival will feature classics such as the Laksa, Mee Goreng, Nasi lemak, Char Kuey Teow, to name a few, and also some specially crafted innovations and more; it’s a presentation of the very best of Malaysia. Cooking up a storm with a staggering selection of traditional recipes at Seasonal Tastes. This food festival will begin on the 25 November 2022 and will be there till 04 December 2022.
