India has been ranked the second most life-changing destination in the world, according to new research from adventure travel company Explore Worldwide. Japan takes the top spot, while New Zealand, Thailand and Iceland complete the top five.

The findings place India ahead of several globally celebrated travel destinations, including New Zealand, Thailand, Iceland, Italy, Switzerland, Peru, Jordan and Nepal. For a country known for its layered history, spiritual depth, cultural intensity and extraordinary diversity, the recognition reflects what travellers have long felt: India is not simply visited, it is experienced.

To reveal which countries travellers find the most life-changing, Explore Worldwide analysed more than 1,500 comments and 447 destination mentions from online forums dedicated to discussing the most transformative trips people have taken. The research looked at journeys that shaped perspectives, offered emotional renewal, created cultural awakenings or stayed with travellers long after they returned home.

India’s second-place ranking is especially significant because few destinations offer such a powerful mix of sensory, spiritual and emotional travel. From the electric energy of Mumbai to the layered history of Delhi and the intense spirituality of Varanasi, India left a deep impression on travellers who shared their experiences online.

For many global travellers, India’s impact lies in its contrasts. It is ancient and modern, chaotic and meditative, deeply personal and overwhelmingly vast. A journey through India can move from royal palaces and sacred rivers to mountain monasteries, desert forts, tropical backwaters, bustling bazaars and quiet village landscapes. Each region offers a completely different rhythm, making the country feel less like one destination and more like a series of awakenings.

One traveller on Reddit said, “I absolutely fell in love with the country, the culture, the people and it massively changed the way I view the world and behave.”

This emotional response is central to India’s appeal. Travellers often speak of India not only in terms of monuments or landscapes, but in terms of feeling. It is the warmth of people, the immediacy of daily life, the rituals, colours, food, festivals, conversations and unexpected moments that make the journey unforgettable.

Japan ranks first in the global list, with 47 mentions. Travellers praised its food, people, beauty, cultural etiquette and striking mix of tradition and modernity. From Tokyo’s neon-lit streets and late-night izakayas to Kyoto’s temple districts and the historic streets of Kanazawa, Japan was described as a destination that encourages reflection and mindfulness. One traveller noted, “It made me more conscious about my day-to-day living, to respect each other and to find beauty in things that others might discard.”

New Zealand follows in third place, celebrated for landscapes that feel cinematic in scale, from Milford Sound to the braided rivers of the Southern Alps. Thailand takes fourth place, praised for its warmth, cultural depth and transformative food scene, while Iceland completes the top five with its volcanic landscapes, northern lights and dramatic otherworldly beauty.

The wider ranking also includes Italy, Switzerland, Peru, Jordan, Nepal, Colombia, Vietnam, Tanzania, Morocco and Ireland, showing that life-changing travel can be found across continents. Yet India’s position near the very top highlights its unique ability to challenge, move and transform travellers in ways that stay with them.

Luke Judd, adventure travel expert at Explore Worldwide, said: “We’re seeing more and more travellers looking for experiences that go beyond relaxation, they want trips that challenge them, move them and leave them with a different perspective on the world. Japan taking the top spot is no surprise given its unique culture and the sheer variety of experiences it offers, but it’s brilliant to see destinations like Jordan, Colombia and Nepal featuring so highly too (ninth, eleventh and tenth place respectively). These are destinations that don’t just impress you, they stay with you, and that’s what meaningful travel is all about.”
