Today’s Traveller: How do you keep up your team’s morale?

Shuvendu Banerjee: Team morale and attitude is the stepping stone to success that can foster good work environment, better employee engagement and increased productivity. I believe that motivation and empathy go a long way in building a team. Where there is Room To Grow and Room To Be Yourself, employees automatically take ownership of their work.

I try to inspire the team to widen their horizon and unleash the creativity in them, offer more flexibility, learn their emotions, embrace honesty and transparency, listen to what they say and involve the team in decision making.

At IHG, we encourage our team members to live our winning ways culture. We also curate interesting activities such as Well Being Weeks, Fun Fridays and many more to ensure there is never a dull moment while the team members work at IHG.

Today’s Traveller: A major milestone that shaped you as a Leader?

Shuvendu Banerjee: My first stint as the General Manager at Crowne Plaza Kochi will always be my most important leap as far as leadership role is concerned.

Today’s Traveller: How do you approach a challenge?

Shuvendu Banerjee: My leadership style is all about leading from the front. The first thing is to develop a positive outlook. Sometimes, due to fear of uncertainty, we tend to lose our ability to take the right decisions at the right time. I take it as a challenge to test my ability and wit.

The second step is to understand the problem at the grass-root level and think of logical ways to solve it.  The third step is to find solutions to the problems and focus on key takeaways for future learning.  It is important to be empathetic but not at the cost of being illogical.

Today’s Traveller: What is the one thing that you have learnt during the Covid19 Pandemic?

Shuvendu Banerjee: Extraordinary times like these come with life lessons that help us widen our perspective at both personal and professional levels. We need to be adaptable and ready to innovate in order to thrive with evolving circumstances and trends. It is all about the survival of the fittest and hence multi-skilling is the key to success.

Today’s Traveller: Which non-professional activities give you energy and satisfaction.

Shuvendu Banerjee: I would love to call myself a sports enthusiast and a spirit connoisseur. I enjoy travelling to new places and spending time with my family.
