As a solo female traveller from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Madurai had always been on my travel list, though never quite as an immediate must-visit. I had heard about its temples, culture, dosas, jasmine flowers and ancient stories, but I had not expected the city to feel so alive.
Then, at last, the date arrived. I landed in Madurai and almost immediately understood why it is called Thoonganagaram, the city that never sleeps. The streets were buzzing with life, tiny tea stalls were full even at midnight, temple bells echoed softly through the air, and somehow, amid all the movement and colour, there was a warmth that made me feel instantly safe and welcomed.

Located conveniently near Mattuthavani and around 20 km from the airport, the hotel felt like the perfect urban retreat after a long journey. The check-in was smooth, the staff greeted me with genuine warmth, and within minutes, I was in my spacious room, looking out at the city lights with a cup of filter coffee in hand.
I stayed in their elegant Classic Room, which was cosy, contemporary and exactly what a solo traveller needs after a day of exploring. The room was thoughtfully designed, with calming interiors, comfortable bedding and all the modern comforts that made me relax almost instantly. But the real surprise was how beautifully the vibe of the hotel matched the vibe of the city.
Madurai After Dark
I had never imagined Madurai to have such a happening nightlife scene. One evening, I walked into LOCAL, the hotel’s lounge bar, expecting a quiet dinner. Instead, I found music, cocktails, pool tables and an energetic crowd. As a woman travelling alone, I am always cautious about nightlife spaces, but LOCAL felt comfortable, vibrant and safe. Even local Reddit users recommend Sterling’s bar as one of the better lounge experiences in the city.
For dinner, I chose the rooftop experience at Upper Deck. Sitting beside a rooftop pool under a starry Tamil Nadu sky, with smoky barbeques arriving fresh from the grill and a warm breeze carrying the sounds of the city below, felt unexpectedly magical. I spent nearly three hours there one evening, simply soaking it all in. Food, I soon realised, would become a huge part of my Madurai memories.
Temples, Flavours and the Pulse of the City
The next morning began with a visit to the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple, barely 6 km from Sterling V Grand Madurai. Seeing the towering gopurams glow in the soft light of sunrise was deeply emotional. The energy there is hard to describe: spiritual, artistic and rooted in centuries of devotion and history. I was so engrossed in its beauty that breakfast no longer seemed important.
By lunch, Grand Ayyanar, the multi-cuisine restaurant at V Grand Madurai, had cast its own charm on me. I discovered flavours I had never tasted before: spicy kari dosa, fluffy idlis, aromatic Chettinad gravies and local Madurai delicacies served alongside global dishes. The live counters and interactive kitchen made every bite feel lively, fresh and full of character.
Then there were the local markets, overflowing with jasmine flowers and brass artefacts. I tasted Jigarthanda from roadside shops, took evening drives around the city, and watched Madurai come alive after dark in its own unmistakable rhythm.
A City That Feels Both Ancient and Effortless
What surprised me most was how balanced the trip felt. I could spend my mornings immersed in centuries-old culture and my evenings enjoying rooftop dinners, cocktails and music back at the hotel. It never felt tiring, because Sterling V Grand Madurai became my comfortable little sanctuary in the middle of this endlessly energetic city.
For women who hesitate to travel solo in South India, Madurai changed my perspective completely. The people were kind, the food unforgettable, the culture deeply enriching, and the hospitality exceptional.
I arrived expecting a quick cultural getaway. I left, already planning my next trip back. This time, to Vythiri, Wayanad, Kerala.
