This is a first for Tata Power in the hospitality Industry and the first hotel in India to take this up, hence of huge importance to IHCL in general and IHCL Goa specifically.

Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa has successfully implemented one of the hospitality sector’s most advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), establishing a new benchmark in sustainable energy management for luxury hotels. With an approximate storage capacity of 2 MW, this initiative is a pivotal step in IHCL’s commitment to decarbonisation under Paathya and the Tata Group’s Aalingana vision.

The BESS installation is executed by Tata Power, following detailed technical feasibility studies. With an investment of approximately ₹ 3.50 crore and projected annual savings of ₹ 1.50 crore while significantly reducing the hotel’s dependency on diesel-based power generation.

Highlighting the project’s significance, Sheetal Singh, Area Director – South Goa & General Manager, Taj Exotica Resort & Spa Goa, shared: “Sustainability is at the core of our ethos at Taj Exotica, Goa. The BESS project is an exemplary step in modernising the way hospitality manages energy. By reducing diesel dependence and enhancing power reliability, we are embracing innovation that directly contributes to a greener, more resilient future for our hotel and our community.”

The initiative is expected to reduce approximately 2 lakh litres of HSD annually, dramatically lowering carbon emissions and operational expenditure. Beyond cost reduction, the system improves power quality, minimises generator runtime and reduces air emissions.

Given Taj Exotica’s multi-source power environment that is Grid, Diesel Generators and Solar, a sophisticated interlocking and protection system was developed along with Tata Power. This includes automated logic for source prioritisation, prevention mechanisms against backfeed and overload, real-time monitoring and safety cut-offs, thermal, short-circuit and surge protections, emergency shutoff and manual override operations, comprehensive safety simulations and load-bank tests were conducted to ensure the system operates seamlessly without disrupting guest comfort or electrical stability.

Physical installation concluded in mid-November 2025, followed by subsequent full-load testing, where the system demonstrated stable discharge curves and accurate switching.

The engineering team ably led by Area Director Engineering – Goa Athen Chellappa has extensively simulated power outage scenarios to validated automatic DG synchronisation, priority-based charging from solar and grid, interlocking accuracy, changeover timing and Internet connectivity essential for cloud-linked operations. These validations ensure reliable functioning during high-occupancy and peak-load periods bundled with an interactive digital dashboard that provides real-time energy flow and charging status, battery health diagnostics, predictive maintenance alerts and historical consumption and savings reports

Summarising the impact of this initiative, Ranjit Phillipose, Senior Vice President – Operations, IHCL Goa, said, “The BESS project at Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Goa is not just an engineering achievement—it is a defining moment in our sustainability journey. By embracing cutting-edge technology and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we are setting new benchmarks for responsible luxury. This initiative reflects our belief that the future of hospitality is clean, resilient and climate-conscious, and we are proud to pioneer that change in Goa.”
