Why do we celebrate Ugadi Festival?

Ugadiis one of the most important festivals celebrated across Andhra, Telangana and certain parts of Karnataka and marks the start of the spring season.

Ugadi is celebrated as the beginning of the New Year by the Telugu and Kannada communities and is ushered in with joy and festivities with traditions and customs reflecting nature.

Mango leaves and coconuts are auspicious symbols and people use these symbols along with the drawing of floral designs on the ground to welcome guests into a clean and welcoming home.

As is the hallmark of every Indian festivity, this Telangana festival celebrates Ugadi with an array of culinary delicacies. Food preparations reflect six basic culinary tastes – salty, sweet, bitter, spicey, and two types of sour flavours, which according to folklore, symbolises happiness and sorrow of life.

A sumptuous spread offered in homes begins with Ugadi Pachadi, a refreshing cool drink made of raw mango, tamarind, green chillies and neem flowers to the tangy mango pachadi, spicy Kodhimbir vada , sesame ladoos and Obbatu flatbreads to name a few.
