JW Marriott, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio, has announced the opening of JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Solio Game Reserve, Laikipia, Kenya

Nestled between the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the camp introduces a wellness-focussed safari experience where guests can slow down, reset and connect with the wonders of the reserve’s wildlife and vibrant flora.
Solio Game Reserve spans 45,000 acres and is known for its rhino conservation programme. It is home to populations of black and white rhinos, as well as leopards, lions, waterbuck, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and more than 300 bird species. Guests can participate in guided game drives during the day and at night, in addition to other wildlife viewing activities.
The camp features 19 tented suites, including one two-bedroom suite. Designed by LW Design, the structures incorporate timber and canvas materials and are positioned to offer views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains, waterholes or the surrounding savannah.
Each suite includes a private deck, plunge pool, indoor freestanding bath and roll-up canvas walls that open to the outdoors. Interiors feature locally sourced furnishings, textiles and artwork by Kenyan artisans, including Kitengela Glass, Safari Bronze and Ceramiqa.
Shared facilities include the Map Room, library, games room and a retail boutique featuring products by local artisans.

In addition to game drives, the camp offers guided walking safaris, cycling excursions, birdwatching and photography experiences. Professional Canon camera equipment is available for guest use, along with guidance from resident photographers.
Optional activities, available on request, include helicopter excursions, trout fishing on Mount Kenya and outdoor painting sessions.
The property’s dining programme incorporates herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in its on-site garden. Dining venues include Mavuno restaurant, Ember Bar and Lounge, a wine room, and an outdoor garden dining space known as “The Garden Table.”
Guests can also participate in bush dining experiences, bread-making sessions and Kenyan cooking classes.
The Spa by JW offers treatments using products from Kenyan skincare brand Jani. Facilities also include a fitness centre, outdoor swimming pool and dedicated wellness spaces.
The camp operates within Solio Game Reserve under the conservancy’s wildlife management guidelines.
Guests can visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage to learn about the rehabilitation of orphaned rhinos and other wildlife before their reintroduction into the reserve.

The property also supports community initiatives through the Lazizi Welfare Foundation, including a meal programme at Riacho Comprehensive School. It works with the conservancy-led Solio Women’s Empowerment Project, through which women from neighbouring communities produce handcrafted items that are incorporated into the guest experience and sold at the camp.
Environmental measures at the camp include solar energy systems, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, composting, recycling and selective upcycling.
According to the company, 95% of the camp’s workforce comprises Kenyan nationals.
The camp is accessible via Nanyuki Airstrip, approximately a 30-minute flight from Wilson Airport, followed by a road transfer. Guests may also charter flights from Wilson Airport to Solio Ranch Airstrip, followed by a 10-minute drive to the camp.
