Mumbai International Airport Limited, operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, has released its Sustainability Report for FY 2024–25, outlining significant progress across environmental stewardship, operational efficiency, community upliftment and digital transformation. The newest report reinforces CSMIA’s position as one of the world’s leading sustainable airports, guided by a long-term commitment to innovation, responsibility and inclusive growth.

During the financial year, CSMIA managed 55.12 million passengers and recorded a peak of 170,516 passengers in a single day. Its network expanded to 126 destinations, supported by an 8.1 percent increase in overall cargo tonnage, further strengthening the airport’s contribution to Mumbai’s economic landscape. The airport also became the first in India and the third globally to receive Level 5 Accreditation for Airport Customer Experience from Airports Council International, marking a significant step in global service excellence.

CSMIA continued to demonstrate strong climate leadership. It has operated entirely on green electricity since August 2022, a transition that now includes all concessionaires, enabling the airport to maintain carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. The reporting period also saw 98.7 percent of waste diverted from landfill and a 5.5 percent reduction in energy intensity. The renewal of the Indian Green Building Council Platinum certification for Terminal 2 further affirmed CSMIA’s dedication to environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Biodiversity preservation and water stewardship remained central pillars of MIAL’s environmental mission. In FY 2024–25, the airport planted 2,000 native species using the Miyawaki afforestation method to support urban green cover. Its biodiversity programme includes continuous monitoring and risk assessments to maintain ecological balance. Water initiatives such as detailed audits, rainwater harvesting systems and advanced sewage treatment reflect a strong commitment to reduce, recycle and recharge principles.

MIAL and the Adani Foundation continued to focus on meaningful community engagement.

Health camps, women’s empowerment programmes and blood donation drives reached more than 4,000 individuals over the year.

The airport’s employee development programme, Saksham, emphasised capability building, inclusion and leadership, exceeding 60,000 manhours of training.
Its workforce policies prioritised gender equality, non-discrimination and parental support, strengthening a culture of fairness and respect.

Digital transformation and passenger experience were significant areas of advancement. With 147 e-gates deployed across the airport, CSMIA now has the highest number of e-gates in India and has achieved a Digi Yatra adoption rate of 30 percent. The modernised Airport Operations Control Centre enhanced real-time coordination and resilience. Accessibility also received focused attention with initiatives such as sign language training for staff, dedicated wheelchair support, tactile flooring for visually impaired passengers and sanitary pad dispensers across all ladies’ washrooms.

The Sustainability Report for FY 2024–25 reflects MIAL’s multi-dimensional approach to integrating sustainability into every aspect of airport operations.

Through continuous improvement in environmental performance, customer experience, digital efficiency and social impact, CSMIA continues to set new benchmarks for sustainable aviation in India.

With each initiative, the airport strengthens its commitment to reducing its ecological footprint while contributing meaningfully to the communities it serves.
