Here are some of the best Golf Courses in India.

What sets India apart from its golf-centric counterparts is diversity—no two courses are inherently alike, and you’ll find one on almost every beach, mountain, desert, and plain.

If India is on your list of must-visit countries this 2022, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about its thriving golf scene!

A brief background on Golf in India

Golf is a growing favorite amongst the Indian population. Thanks to frequent international visitors, it is no longer just a “wealthy man’s sport.” To get a deeper insight into golf’s exponential rise in the country, let’s take a closer look at its humble beginnings.

History

Golf has graced the Indian metropolis since the mid-1800s, its first establishment being the Royal Calcutta Golf Club. Like other sports, golf was a British import, growing alongside other sports like cricket and badminton.

However, the “gentleman’s sport” did not make a competitive turn for nearly two decades when golf clubs appeared in Bangalore, Shillong, Srinagar, Mandras, and Bombay.

Major Tournaments

India hosted its first major tournament, the All-India Amateur Championship, in 1892 at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club and eventually introduced a women’s championship in 1906.

It was not until after World War II that Indian players began asserting their dominance as champions, birthing top players like IS Malik and Mohinder Bal.

Then, the Indian Golf Union (IGU) was founded in 1957, with the first-ever international golfing event occurring in India in 1964. Nowadays, India boasts nearly 200 golf clubs, many of which have become international favorites.
