SAATHIYA’s SANCALP Event teams with WICCI to empower youth with quality Skills and Jobs

SAATHIYA a Shibulal Family Philanthropic Initiative endeavours to fulfill the aspirations of youth from economically weaker sections of society, who wish to make a career in Hospitality Operations.

SAATHIYA held an event aptly named SANCALP (Social Action Network for Career Assistance and Livelihood Partnerships)  in Bangalore on the 26 July where it brought together all its partners who support it with skilling and employing persons from disadvantaged backgrounds. 

SAATHIYA’s goal is to enable underserved youth of our society to get quality jobs in professional hotels and help those youth sustain and grow in their jobs. The objective of  SANCALP was to bring all important stakeholders together to help achieve this goal. The event had NGOs like Salaam Balak Trust, Gyanoday RTC,  Smera Foundation and many more who support the foundation with the mobilisation of youth, skill providers and the hospitality HR fraternity who hires and induct these young persons into their hotels, hotel operations teams that train them on the job and provide them with a career path.

WICCI Hospitality has been a  strategic partner for this initiative and supports Saathiya in not only training but also placing many of its students in hotels in NCR and Bangalore. 

In the ongoing efforts to grow its skill and career development agenda, in order to support the Hospitality sector during its toughest talent crunch post-COVID, WICCI actively participated in a one-day workshop – SANCALP conducted by their Skill & Career Development partner SAATHIYA, on the possibilities of providing non-traditional hires with a sustainable livelihood in Hospitality.

The event saw all stakeholders of this honourable cause come together from NGOs to the Skill Development partner to Government to Hotels, all joining hands in an attempt to collectively provide better support to the underserved youth, to create a win-win situation for the Hospitality industry and the marginalised youth of the country.

Panel Discussion

Ritu Chawla Mathur, VP – National for WICCI Hospitality, who attended the workshop in Bangalore along with the leadership of the WICCI – Karnataka (Manisha Sharma, Kadambari Sabharwal), also moderated a panel discussion with the experienced Hotel HR leaders from the industry.

She spoke about non-traditional hiring being the new source of talent for the hospitality industry. She shared instances where WiCCI Hospitality national council members – Meena Bhatia,  Urmil  Khurana and Asha Pathania had actively led the Saathiya partnership and this initiative that had helped train and employ 35 women in hotels. Though this was a small beginning it gave the partnership momentum and reinforced the strength of the training. With this win the team was enthused to continue to focus on getting many more young persons into the fold. 

Wicci team members Manisha Sharma, General Manager, Renaissance Bengaluru Race Course Hotel, and Kadambari Sabarwal, General Manager Courtyard by Marriott Bengaluru Hebbal attended the event while Sita Lekshmi, General Manager of Aloft Bangalore graciously hosted the event.

Ritu Chawla went on to say, “Sharing the Hospitality sectors expectations with such unconventional sources of hiring through focused panel discussions with HR leaders from Marriott, Shangri-La, as well as Hotel GMs, it has been our genuine attempt to bridge the gap between industry and skill providers, with a common agenda of integrating non-traditional hires in the workforce to guide them in becoming productive and help retain them and grow in their jobs, through industry-led supervision.”

During the event, WICCI was honoured to receive an award from SAATHIYA for being a valued partner, since its journey in Oct 2020.

WICCI is extremely proud to have joined SAATHIYA’s efforts to bring 100+ underserved youth into the hospitality industry, of which 61% are young women (As of 2022); with a 92% rate of retention in their entry-level positions with top brands like Marriott, Radisson, Hyatt, Lemon Tree etc
